Big Inning, Strong Pitching Performance Gives Hofstra Win In Series Finale

Brookline, MA - Nick Reese threw a complete game three-hitter and the Hofstra offense erupted for 11 runs in the fourth inning in a 13-2 victory over Northeastern in seven innings Sunday at Friedman Diamond. The complete game was the first of Reese's career.

Hofstra's win moves the Pride's record to 15-22 overall and 9-12 in league action. Northeastern dropped to 25-17 overall and 15-6 in CAA play.

Reese (3-2) allowed two runs (1 earned) on three singles in his 84-pitch outing. The freshman left-hander walked three and struck out a pair.

The Huskies scored a run in each of the first two innings before the Pride put up their biggest inning of the season in the fourth. Hofstra sent 16 batters to the plate in scoring 11 runs. The Pride had six hits in the inning and took advantage of two hit batters, three walks, and three Northeastern errors.

Tyler Cox drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly after the Pride loaded the bases on two hit by pitches and a single. After another walk loaded the bases, Hofstra would score on a fielder's choice where all runners were safe due to an error. Another error after a lineout resulted in another run to make it 3-2. Michael Brown's ground rule double added another run and consecutive walks brought in another. Gabriel Melara singled in two and Nick Gallello followed with a two-run double for a 9-2 lead. Cox singled in a run for his second RBI of the inning and Nick Biddle added a single of his own to score Cox with the final run of the frame.

Hofstra would tack on a run in the fifth as CJ Griggs and Danny Corona hit back to back doubles and then another in the seventh on Melara's RBI single, his third RBI of the day.

Brown, Melara, and Gallello each had a pair of hits on the day.

Northeastern starter Ryan Griffin (6-1) took the loss after allowing six runs (2 earned) on three hits in 3 â…” innings.

Hofstra returns to the field Tuesday when it hosts St. John's Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
