Hofstra Rallies For Road Win At NJIT

Little Falls, NJ - Jackson Bauer tossed four shutout innings in relief and the Hofstra offense took advantage of 10 walks and four hit batsmen to score 11 runs on six hits in an 11-5 win over NJIT at Yogi Berra Stadium Tuesday night. Nick Gallello had two hits, including a two-run home run, while Michael Brown added a pair of hits as well.

Hofstra moved to 14-20 on the season with its second consecutive win and third in the last four games. The Highlanders slipped to 13-22 with their second consecutive loss.

NJIT opened the scoring in the third with two runs. But Hofstra battled back to tie the score in the top of the fourth as Danny Corona was hit by a pitch and Gallello followed with a two-run home run. The Highlanders would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go back up, 4-2. Nick Vega and Ty Sallie each had RBI singles with the bases loaded for NJIT in the inning.

The Pride broke the game open in the sixth, scoring eight runs on two hits. Hofstra scored a run on a throwing error and another on a fielder's choice before Sam Leonard singled in the go ahead run to make it 5-4. The Pride then loaded the bases and drew three consecutive walks to make it an 8-4 game. Corona capped the scoring with a two-run single.

Hofstra would load the bases without a hit in the ninth on two walks around a hit by pitch and plate its final run on a wild pitch. NJIT added a run in its final turn at bat on back-to-back doubles from Connor Klock and Vega.

Bauer (1-1) struck out five batters and gave up two hits and no walks to earn the win.

Sallie and Vega each drove in two runs for the Highlanders. Reliever Brendan Opat (0-1) took the loss after allowing five unearned runs in the sixth inning, lasting ⅔ of an inning.

Hofstra is back in action this weekend in Brookline, Massachusetts, with a three-game series at Northeastern. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m.
