Ninth Inning Heroics Lifts Hofstra To Series Win At UNCW

Wilmington, NC - Hofstra scored three times, all with two outs, in the top of the ninth inning and then held off a UNCW rally in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 CAA win Sunday at Brooks Field. Michael Brown had the game-tying double and CJ Griggs followed with a 2-run home run to knock in the winning runs.

The victory gave Hofstra (13-20, 8-10 CAA) the series victory over the Seahawks (21-18, 10-8). Tanner Sanderoff, Hofstra's fifth pitcher of the day, earned the win and moved to 3-3 on the season.

The Seahawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and scored a run on a walk. Hofstra responded in the top of the second as Michael Craig doubled in Danny Corona to tie the game.

UNCW went ahead, 2-1, in the third with the run scoring on a passed ball. The Seahawks loaded the bases again in the fourth and added a run on another bases loaded walk.

Hofstra would get a run back in the sixth as Gabriel Melara singled, went to third on a single from Daniel Escalante, and scored on a wild pitch from Trey Williford. The Pride would tie the score at three in the seventh as Brown doubled in JJ DeVito.

The lead was short-lived as UNCW went back up by one, 4-3, in the bottom of the frame. A walk and a sacrifice was followed by an RBI single from Howie Ricketts.

In the ninth, UNCW reliever Clay Masonis retired the first two batters before giving up a pinch-hit double to Nick Gallello. Brown followed with a double off the wall in left center that plated pinch-runner Giovanni Bausone with the tying run. Griggs then drove a 1-1 offering from Masonis off the light stanchion over the wall in left center to make it a 6-4 game.

UNCW tried to comeback in their turn at bat as John Newton led off with a double and came in to score on a one-out double from Ricketts. Pinch-runner Jackson Hood went to third on a passed ball, but Sanderoff got a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.

Brown finished the day with two hits, both doubles, while Griggs' home run was his lone hit of the game. Sanderoff allowed a run on two hits over 2 ⅓ innings with four strikeouts.

Masonis (0-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in the ninth. Ricketts went 4-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Seahawks.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at NJIT with a 6 p.m. start time.
