Mollica's Career Day Leads Hofstra Past UMBC

Farmingdale, NY - Anthony Mollica scored a career-best six goals to help lead Hofstra to an 11-10 victory over UMBC Saturday evening at Rams Stadium on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The Pride had a 10-5 lead midway through the third quarter and held off a late rally by the Retrievers. 

Hofstra moved to 2-4 on the season and snapped a four-game losing streak. UMBC dropped to 1-4 on the season. 

Hofstra built a 4-1 lead after one quarter behind a pair of goals from Trevor Natalie, and one apiece from Mollica and Blake Cooling. Mollica would score three of the Pride's four goals in the second quarter as Hofstra took an 8-4 lead into halftime. The senior attackman, whose previous career best was five goals against Hampton, matched that when he scored the first goal of the third quarter to put the Pride ahead by a 9-4 score. Trey Parkes would make it a 10-5 game with 8:08 remaining in the third before the Retrievers went on the offensive. 

UMBC would score three unanswered goals to make it a 10-8 game with 13:56 to play in the fourth quarter following Jake Kucinski's unassisted goal. Mollica would end the UMBC run with his sixth tally with 11:24 to go. Zach Coyle scored for the Retrievers with 10:19 to play to make it 11-9, but the Pride defense clamped down and kept the Retrievers off the board until a Ryan Demato goal with 12 seconds to play. 

Shea Kennedy made 11 saves for the Pride, while his UMBC counterpart, Connor McMahon, stopped 10 shots. 

Connor Chick paced the UMBC offense with three goals. Alex Steers had 10 ground balls and won 16 of 22 face-offs. 

Natalie had two goals for Hofstra, while Parkes added a goal and an assist. Will Delaney scooped up six ground balls. 

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, March 13 at Stony Brook in the CAA opener. Game time is at 6:31 p.m.

-Hofstra is 4-1 all-time against UMBC.
-UMBC had a 35-34 edge in shots.
-Gus Langtry also had a goal for Hofstra.
