Hofstra Takes Series With Walkoff Win Over Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - CJ Griggs' single up the middle capped a four-run Hofstra rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pride defeated Northeastern, 11-10, Sunday at Univeristy Field. The victory gave Hofstra the CAA series win over the Huskies, with both win in walk-off fashion.

Hofstra improved to 8-14 overall and 4-5 in the CAA with the win. Northeastern dropped to 14-12 overall and 8-4 in league play.

The Pride trailed 10-7 going into their final turn at bat. With runners on first and second and one out, Daniel Escalante single in a run to make it 10-8. After a hit batsman loaded the bases, Michael Brown grounded out to make it a 1-run game. JJ Devito followed with a walk to load the bases and Tyler Cox walked to force in the tying run. That set up Griggs to be the hero and the sophomore catcher delivered a single up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to score Tyler Castrataro with the winning run.

Freshman Nick Reese (1-2) got the final out of the top of the ninth to get credit for the win. Matthew Sapienza (0-3) took the loss after allowing a run on one hit, two walks, and a hit batter.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at Rutgers with a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Notes:
-Escalante had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
-Hofstra starter Sean Hamilton matched his career high with seven strikeouts.
-Hofstra had 15 hits with Griggs, Brown, Cox, and Nick Gallello each collecting two.
