Hofstra Wins In Extra Innings Over Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Michael Brown's single in the bottom of the 11th inning drove in Gabriel Melara with the winning run as Hofstra defeated Northeastern Friday afternoon in the opening game of a CAA series at University Field. Hofstra chipped away at a 3-0 deficit and took the lead before the Huskies tied the game in the eighth.

Northeastern put up a three-run fourth inning against Pride starter Carlos Martrinez. Carmelo Musacchia walked and Harrison Feinberg singled to right center to put two runners on for Cooper Tarantino, who laced an RBI single through the right side to score Musacchia. AJ Aschettino followed with a two-run single to center to give the Huskies a 3-0 cushion.

Hofstra got on the board with a run in the fourth scoring on a double play grounder and another in the fifth on a Brown ground out to cut the deficit to 3-2. Tyler Cox tied the game at three in the sixth with a leadoff solo home run, his third of the season.

Hofstra would take the lead in the sixth as Melara reached on an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then took third on a balk. Then with the infield in, Brown ripped an RBI single past short for a 4-3 lead.

The Huskies tied the game in the eighth, loading the bases before a walk to Carter Bentley brought in the equalizer.

Both teams had opportunities to score before Brown's 11th-inning heroics. The Huskies left the bases loaded in the ninth and 11th innings, while the Pride left two on in the ninth.

In the Hofstra 11th, Melara led off with an infield single to short. Nick Biddle moved him over with a sacrifice bunt and Brown followed with a hard single to right on a 1-0 pitch from Northeastern reliever Matthew Sapienza (0-2) to plate Melara.

Bryden Gregg (2-1) picked up the win with 2 ⅓ innings of hitless and scoreless relief. Brown finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Melara had two hits and two runs scored.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
