Buies Creek, NC -
Kayleigh Bender had a career-high seven goals to lead the Hofstra women's lacrosse team to a huge 13-11 road win over Campbell on Sunday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Bender scored her seven goals on just nine shots and her seventh of the game with 2:47 left proved to be the game-winner.
The win moved Hofstra to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in CAA play. Campbell dropped to 9-3 and 0-2 in conference action.
Hofstra had to battle back early as Campbell scored the game's first two goals before three straight Pride goals, including two from Bender, made it 3-2 about halfway through the opening stanza. The teams would be knotted at three headed into the second quarter before Hofstra scored three of the four goals in that quarter to take a two-goal lead at the halftime break. It was Bender once again as she scored twice in the quarter, including with 19 seconds left to push the advantage to two.
Campbell would rally in the third quarter and a 5-2 scoring run by the home team would actually give them a 9-8 lead late in the quarter. Bender answered once again for the Pride and tied the score at nine with 26 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Pride took an early 11-9 lead in the final quarter, with
Nikki Mennella making it 11-9 with 10:55 to play. The Camels fought back and the game would be tied at 11 with 3:41 left after a goal from Campbell's Emily Wilson.
It was Bender's time to shine, though, and she scored what would be the game-winner with 2:47 to play before
Kate Lemery added an insurance goal with 2:11 showing on the clock.
Luchianna Cardello was outstanding for the Pride with 10 saves in the contest.
