Hofstra Puts Up 15 Runs In Win Over New Haven

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra erupted for 13 runs over its final three turns at bat as the Pride posted a 15-5 victory in eight innings over New Haven Tuesday at University Field. The Pride sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, scoring eight times to invoke the run rule. 

Hofstra moved to 4-10 on the season, while New Haven slipped to 1-11 overall.

Michael Brown went 4-6 on the day with a double, two RBIs, and four runs. Tyler Cox was 3-3 with a single, double, triple, three walks, four RBIs, and two runs. Danny Corona added two hits, two runs, and an RBI. 

The Pride trailed 3-2 before a three-run sixth inning gave them the lead. Corona started the rally with a single and came around on a double from Brown. With runners on the corners, New Haven was called for a balk to score Brown with the go-ahead run. Cox then delivered a single that drove in CJ Griggs for a 5-3 lead. 

The Pride extended the lead to 7-3 in the seventh as Michael Craig doubled followed by a Brown single that drove in pinch runner Sam Leonard. Two batters later, Griggs drove in Brown with a single. 

The Chargers got two runs back in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Pride would put the game to bed in the bottom of the inning. After loading the bases with a double and two hit batters, Gabriel Melara hit a sacrifice fly. Corona followed with an RBI single. Leonard reached on a fielder's choice that plated one with an error on the play that allowed Corona to reach second. Brown's infield single loaded the bases for JJ DeVito, who drove in a run with a groundout. Griggs walked to load the bases for Cox, who led off the inning with a double. The Pride's cleanup hitter cleared the bases with a triple to the right field corner to make it 14-5. The game would end on an infield throwing error that allowed Cox to score the winning run.  

Reliever Grady Lacourciere (1-2) earned the win, allowing two runs over four innings. Justin Eckrote (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in ⅔ of an inning.

Hofstra returns to action Wednesday at Fairfield.

-This was the first meeting between Hofstra and New Haven.
-Hofstra is 2-0 at home this season.
-Russell Hunter started for the Pride and allowed two runs over three innings.
-Hofstra batters were hit four times.
-DeVito stole two bases.
