Hofstra Falls To Holy Cross In Double-Overtime

Farmingdale, NY - Ryan Botek scored for Holy Cross with 1:42 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Crusaders to a 9-8 victory over Hofstra Friday evening at Rams Stadium on the campus of Farmingdale State College. Anthony Mollica had two goals and an assist for the Pride, while keeper Shea Kennedy stopped 18 shots.

Hofstra slipped to 1-1 on the young season, while Holy Cross improved to 1-1.

Following a low-scoring first half that saw the teams deadlocked at three, the offense picked up in the third quarter. Hofstra outscored Holy Cross, 5-3, in the quarter to take an 8-6 lead. The Crusaders opened the third quarter with a quick goal from Owen Tunney, 56 seconds in before Drew Bogardus and Topher Accetta scored back-to-back to give the Pride a 5-4 lead. The teams alternated goals with Botek tying the score at 6 with 6:38 to go in the quarter. Trey Parkes scored off a pass from Mollica with 4:40 to go and Mollica converted an Austin Clarke pass with 1:30 on the clock to give the Pride an 8-6 lead going into the fourth.

The final quarter in regulation reverted back to a low scoring affair with the Crusaders getting the only goals as Jon-Luke Duley scored four minutes in and Jude Lynch tied the score at eight with his third of the game with 9:25 to play.

Neither team got many offensive chances in the first overtime, combining for three shots with none on target. The Crusaders would control possession in the second overtime and fired seven shots before Botek netted the game-winner off a pass from Sam McDonald.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 14 at Siena with a 12 p.m. face-off.
