Boston, MA - The man is simply elite. After a hall of fame career as a player at Hofstra, followed by a successful NBA career that included winning an NBA title, Hofstra Head Coach
Speedy Claxton added another milestone to his ledger as he captured career win No. 100 as head coach of the Pride this afternoon.
The milestone win for Claxton came in Hofstra's 82-68 win over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
Hofstra moved to 19-10 overall and 10-6 in CAA play with the win. The victory was Hofstra's second straight and sixth in its last seven games. Northeastern dropped to 6-20 and 2-13 in league action.
Cruz Davis led the way with 22 points, while
Preston Edmead added 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists and
German Plotnikov chipped in with 18 points.
Claxton is the ninth Hofstra head coach to reach 100 career wins and is tied with Jack McDonald (1936-42 and 1946-47) for eighth on the all-time program wins list.
It didn't take long for the Pride to take its first double-digit lead in the contest as an early 10-2 scoring run made it 17-6 in favor of Hofstra following a basket from Edmead with 13:25 left in the opening half. Northeastern battled all the way back to take the lead at one point but Hofstra closed the first stanza with seven straight points to lead 39-30 at the break. The half-closing run included a pair of baskets from Boston native
Jaeden Roberts.
Leading by 11 just over four minutes into the second half, Hofstra would take control of the contest as the Pride used an 11-0 run to open up a 58-36 advantage with 12:47 remaining after a three-pointer from
Biggie Patterson. That proved to be the largest lead of the game for Hofstra, which coasted from there and never allowed the advantage to get under double figures in capturing the road win.
Joshua DeCady had nine points and four rebounds for the Pride, which got a game-high 11 rebounds, three points, and three blocks from
Silas Sunday.
Youri Fritz had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Northeastern, which also got 10 points and 10 rebounds from Xavier Abreu. William Kermoury had a team-high 17 points for the Huskies.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, February 28 when it hosts Stony Brook at 7 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com.
