Biggie Patterson had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and the Pride held Stony Brook to 29% shooting from the field as the Hofstra men's basketball team earned a hard-fought 67-58 victory over the Seawolves on Saturday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The 20-win season is the fourth under Head Coach
Speedy Claxton and the 27th in program history.
The win clinches a double-bye in the upcoming CAA Championship for Hofstra, which will first be in action on Sunday, March 8 in the quarterfinals.
Hofstra moved its record to 20-10 overall and 11-6 in CAA play with the win. Stony Brook dropped to 17-13 and 9-8 in the league. The Pride has won three straight and seven of its last eight contests.
The double-double was Patterson's team-leading fourth of the season. He was joined in double figures by
German Plotnikov with 15 points and
Preston Edmead with 14 points.
Hofstra took a pair of 10-point leads in the opening 20 minutes, including at 31-21 with 3:45 left before intermission before Stony Brook battled back. The Seawolves closed the half on an 11-1 run to send the game into the break knotted at 32.
Stony Brook drained a three-pointer to open the second half scoring, but Hofstra immediately responded and scored seven straight to lead 39-35 after a pair of free throws from
Joshua DeCady.
With the Pride holding a narrow 48-46 lead with less than 10 minutes to play, Hofstra would begin to gradually pull away. The home team used an extended 12-4 run to push the lead back to 10, 60-50, following a three-pointer from Patterson with 6:05 left. The lead would not get under five the rest of the way and the Pride hit four free throws in the final 2:01 to account for the final margin.
Cruz Davis chipped in with eight points and six assists, while
Silas Sunday posted eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks.
Victory Onuetu added seven points and seven rebounds, while Plotnikov also had seven caroms.
Ethan Simmon had 14 points for Stony Brook, while Oleg Kojenets tallied nine points and eight rebounds.
Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Drexel in the regular season finale at 7 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex. The Pride will honor its seniors prior to the contest. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com.
