Davis Tops 1,000 Hofstra Points, Lifts Pride Past Charleston

Charleston, SC - The leading candidate for CAA Player of the Year, Cruz Davis, had 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a huge 66-62 road win over Charleston on Thursday evening at TD Arena. Davis played all 40 minutes and was incredible down the stretch as he scored the Pride's last seven points to carry Hofstra to the victory.

It was a career milestone night for Davis as he became the 43rd member of the 1,000-Point Club at Hofstra with a free throw in the second half. Davis needed 13 points for 1,000 at Hofstra coming into the contest.

German Plotnikov had a stellar night for the Pride as he scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half to lead Hofstra to a seven-point halftime advantage. Plotnikov, who also played all 40 minutes, drained a Hofstra individual season-high six three-pointers in the game.

The win was Hofstra's fourth consecutive victory.

Hofstra improved to 17-9 overall and 8-5 in league play. Charleston dropped to 16-10 and 9-4 in conference action.

Fueled by five first half three-pointers from Plotnikov, the Pride led 37-30 at the break as Hofstra scored the final six points of the opening stanza to take the momentum into the locker room.

Hofstra was able to push the lead to 11, 44-33, with 15:20 left in regulation as the Pride scored five straight culminating with a basket from Silas Sunday

Charleston battled back and cut the Pride lead to three, 45-42, before Hofstra once again answered and used a 7-0 scoring run to lead 52-42 with 11:02 left following a Davis jump shot.

Down the stretch the Cougars were able to close the deficit to two on a trio of occasions but each Hofstra answered and it was Davis each time. The last time it was a two-point game was at 61-59 with exactly a minute remaining before Davis put the proverbial nail in the coffin with a layup high off the glass with 35 ticks left. He would add three free throws over the final 22 seconds to cement the important road victory.

Biggie Patterson had a strong game off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds, while Sunday added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Colby Duggan and Chris Davis Jr. each had 14 points for Charleston. The Pride held Jlynn Counter to nine points on 1-10 shooting.

Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to UNCW for a 4 p.m. contest. That game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
