Hempstead, NY -
Preston Edmead poured in a career-high 24 points and
Silas Sunday added eight points and a career-high-tying 11 rebounds to power the Hofstra men's basketball team to a thrilling 67-64 overtime victory over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win was Hofstra's eighth consecutive victory. It is the longest win streak since a 12-game streak during the 2022-23 season and tied for the 18th-longest in program history.
Cruz Davis added 19 points, including 16 in the second half. Edmead also had 16 points after halftime.
Hofstra improved to 13-4 with the win and moved to a perfect 4-0 in CAA action. Monmouth dropped to 8-9 and 2-2 in the league.
With the score knotted at 12 in the first half, Monmouth used a 12-3 run to take a 24-15 lead with 3:39 left before halftime. Edmead helped Hofstra close the gap to five at the break with a step-back jumper with nine seconds left in the opening stanza.
It was all Hofstra to start the second half as the Pride put together a 14-3 run to open up a six-point advantage, 38-32, following a three-pointer from Davis with 15:37 left in regulation. The Pride would hold the lead for much of the second half, including at 58-54 with 2:27 left courtesy of a basket from Sunday. Trailing by three, Monmouth got an old-fashioned three-point play from Dok Muordar with 50 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
As he did at Drexel last week, the Pride's
A.J. Wills hit another huge late three-pointer for Hofstra as he opened overtime with a basket just 29 seconds into the extra session. The two teams combined for only 11 points in the extra session and Hofstra went a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line to cement the home victory. The Pride never trailed in overtime.
Joshua DeCady tallied five points, nine rebounds, and two assists, while
Victory Onuetu grabbed nine rebounds as well. Davis and Edmead both added six rebounds, while Davis had three assists and Edmead dished out two.
Jason Rivera-Torres had 30 points and nine rebounds for Monmouth, which also got 13 points from Andrew Ball.
Hofstra is next in action when it travels to Stony Brook on Thursday, January 15 for a 7 p.m. contest. That game will air on SNY and FloCollege.
