Hofstra Pushes Winning Streak to Three with Double OT Victory Against Bryant

Smithfield, RI – On a rain-soaked Steven '69 and Lily Cowen Field in Rhode Island, the Hofstra field hockey team came away with a 2-1 double overtime win over hosts Bryant. Hofstra is now 3-1 with its third consecutive win, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-2.

After a scoreless first half, the Pride opened the day's scoring 4:36 into the start of the third quarter thanks to Jaime Lewis. With the ball deep inside Bryant's half of the field, Lewis forced a Bulldog turnover, entered the shooting arc, and unleashed a shot that bounced off the turf and into the back of the goal for the opener. Bryant evened the score at 1-1 just under two minutes into the fourth quarter off a penalty corner that beat Luci Hollister.

With neither side able to find the go-ahead goal, the Pride headed to its second overtime game in three days. Hofstra outshot Bryant 3-1 in the first overtime period without finding the winner. On Hofstra's first attacking opportunity of the second overtime period, Gwenn van Dijk drove from the near sideline towards the Bryant goal. Her first effort from close-range was denied by Bryant goalkeeper Maud Van Iierop, but van Dijk's snuck her rebound attempt past the outstretched blocker and in 1:39 into the frame to send Hofstra home with the win.

Luci Hollister earned the third in of her young career with three saves.

Hofstra travels to New England once again for its next contest, this time heading to Connecticut to face Yale on Fridy, September 12, at 5 p.m., before hosting Villanova at noon on Sunday, September 14.
