Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra field hockey team battled back from a two-goal deficit to win, 3-2, over Rider after winning 3-2 in the overtime shootout from Cindy Lewis Stadium. Hofstra moves to 2-1 on the season, and Rider is now 1-1 with the loss.
The Broncs took a 1-0 lead over the hosts on the second penalty corner of the contest 3:20 into the opening quarter, and they doubled the lead on a penalty corner less than a minute into the second. Hofstra halved the Rider lead with a penalty corner goal of their own off the stick of
Teresa Karoff with 7:19 left in the quarter. Karoff inserted the ball to
Gwenn van Dijk waiting at the edge of the shooting arc, and an unmarked Karoff got her stick to van Dijk's shot to redirect it past Rider's goalkeeper.
Despite Hofstra outshooting Rider 5-0 and earning four penalty corners to Rider's zero, the Pride were unable to find the back of the net and continued to trail by one going into the fourth quarter. With 5:07 remaining on the clock, Hofstra took its eighth penalty corner of the contest, and
Jaime Lewis got just enough of her stick onto
Jamie Mc Millan's shot to redirect it into the back of the net and even the score at 2-2.
Both teams had a number of scoring opportunities in both overtime periods, but neither side could find the winning goal, sending the game to a shootout.
Luci Hollister denied Rider's first shootout attempt, while
Teresa Karoff converted her chance to put the Pride ahead. The next two shooters for Rider converted their chances, while Mc Millan buried hers but
Tess Satterfield had her effort denied to even the shootout score at 2-2. Hollister stopped the next Bronc attempt, and van Dijk put the Pride back in front with her chance. Needing to convert its attempt to continue the shootout, Hollister denied Megan Normile with a sliding stop to seal the win.
Fresh off being named the CAA Rookie of the Week, Hollister made nine saves in 80 minutes between the posts for the win, while Rider goalie Jade Regnart stopped 12 Hofstra chances in the defeat.
Hofstra travels to Rhode Island on Sunday, September 7, for a 12 p.m. contest against Bryant.
