Hofstra Gets Past Columbia Behind Ziewiec, Basenach

Hempstead, NY - Jan Ziewiec and Aaron Basenach each recorded their first career goals and the Hofstra defense limited Columbia to two shots on goal in a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Captains Field. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 5-4 on the season with the win, while Columbia dropped to 1-3-2. The Lions defense also played well, holding Hofstra to five shots on goal.

The Pride got an early set piece opportunity, 15:20 into the game, following a foul outside the 18-yard box. Stefano Campisi took the free kick and sent a service into the box that a leaping Ziewiec got a head on for a 1-0 lead.

Basenach was in the right place at the right time for his goal as a long throw-in bounced around the box before coming out to the junior from Germany at the top. He collected and sent a right-footed shot just inside the near post for the insurance goal at 78:45.

The goal proved decisive as eight minutes later, Jack McDaid banged a 21-yard free kick off the crossbar and in for his second goal of the season. However, the Lions would not get off another shot as the Pride was able to keep possession for much of the remaining time.

Hofstra will return to action Saturday at Drexel in a CAA contest that starts at 1 p.m.
