No.23 Hofstra Blanks St. John's

Hempstead, NY - Laurie Goddard and Daniel Burko scored goals, and Sean Bohan made two saves as No. 23 Hofstra picked up a 2-0 victory over St. John's Sunday night at Captains Field. The win improved Hofstra's record to 1-1 on the season, while the Red Storm slipped to 1-1 as well.

The Pride came out aggressively and controlled the pace of play. Hofstra's pressure resulted in a foul in the box and a penalty kick opportunity at the 7:33 mark, which Goddard sent into the upper left corner for his first goal of the season. The Pride did not let up and just about three minutes later, Aaron Basenach's tackle in Hofstra's offensive end stripped a St. John's player of the ball and sent it to Burko, who buried a shot from distance for a 2-0 lead. It was Burko's second tally of the year.

From that point, the Hofstra midfield and defense was up to the task, limiting the Red Storm's chances. Bohan faced only two shots on goal and stopped both, including a diving stop on a second half attempt.

St. John's keeper Alec McLachlan made two saves as well in the losing effort.

Hofstra returns to action next Sunday, August 31, at Binghamton with a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 4-10-2 all-time against St. John's but is 2-0-2 in the last four contests. This was the first game since 2017.
