Hofstra Tripped Up By Elon In Series Finale

Hempstead, NY - For the second consecutive game Hofstra battled back from a deficit to take the lead but could not hold it as Elon rallied in its final two turns at bat to post a 10-8 victory over the Pride at University Field. The win gave the Phoenix a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series sweep.

Hofstra dipped to 14-34 overall and 4-17 in the CAA with the loss. Elon moved to 23-25 overall and 12-9 in league action.

The Phoenix scored a run in the first before the Pride pushed two across in the bottom of the inning. Dylan Palmer led off the bottom of the first with a double and came in on a triple from Michael Brown, who would come in on a rundown play at first later in the inning.

Elon would take advantage of a throwing error in the third to score five runs. Will Vergantino had an RBI double and Justin Szestowicki added a two-run home run. The Pride would get two runs back in the fourth on Nick Biddle's first career home run. The teams traded runs in the sixth with Trent Jenks' solo home run making it a 7-5 game.

Hofstra would take an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the seventh as Luke Masiuk tripled in Palmer, who had reached on an error. Tyler Castrataro followed with a single to center that tied the game at seven. Following a stolen base and a throwing error that sent Castrataro to third, Jenks reached on an infield single to plate the go ahead run.

The Phoenix would go back on top in the eighth after a single, a walk, and a two-run double off the bat of Kenny Mallory Jr. Ryan Sprock would tack on an insurance run in the ninth with an RBI single.

The Pride would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but Sam Nomura escaped the jam unscathed for his second save of the series and third overall.

Hank Krift (2-4) was credited with the win after throwing one inning of relief. Tanner Sanderoff (1-3) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing three runs on three hits over 3 ⅓ innings of work.
