Hofstra Takes Two From Towson

Hempstead, NY - Tristan Nemjo and Sean Hamilton each turned in solid starts and the Pride offense pounded out 25 hits over the two games as Hofstra swept a Coastal Athletic Association doubleheader from Towson Saturday at University Field. The Pride won game one, 12-7, and took game two, 5-3. 

Hofstra snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 16-34 overall and 6-17 in the CAA. Towson dipped to 19-33 overall and 9-14 in league action.

Nemjo (2-6) tossed 6 ⅓ innings and tied his career high with eight strikeouts. He allowed four runs on five hits. The Pride offense opened the game with a seven-run first inning. Tyler Castrataro had a two-run single, Trent Jenks added a two-run double, and Nick Gallello added a two-run single. Dylan Palmer drove in the final run with a ground out. 

Hofstra would build an 11-2 lead after six innings before the Tigers struck for five runs in the seventh. Brian Henkelman had the big hit, a grand slam to right center. But Brayden Gregg came out of the bullpen and went the final 2 ⅔ innings without allowing a run to preserve the win. Palmer and Castrataro each finished with three hits in the opener. Castrataro and Jenks each drove in three runs. 

In the nightcap, Hamilton (1-4) notched his first career victory, scattering three runs on eight hits over  6 ⅓ innings. He struck out seven batters, matching his career-best. Castrataro had a two-run home run in the first inning and Palmer added his first of the season, a solo shot in the third, as Hofstra built a 5-1 lead after five innings. 

Brett Ahalt had a two-run single for Towson in the seventh to make it a 5-3 game, but Tanner Sanderoff went the final 2 ⅔ without allowing a run to notch his third save of the season. Palmer had three more hits in game two to finish with six on the day. Gallello drove in a run for the Pride with a sacrifice fly. 

Hofstra will look for the series sweep Sunday at 12 p.m. when the teams play the finale. The game will be Hofstra's senior day with ceremonies starting at 11:30 a.m.

Notes:
-Palmer stole five bases on the day with four in game one. 
-The sweep was Hofstra's second of the season (Iona)
-Every Hofstra batter in game one had at least one hit.
-During his start, Nemjo recorded his 100th career strikeout and now has 106.
