Hofstra Comes Up Short In Back-And-Forth Game Versus Elon

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra pounded out a season-high 23 hits and erased a 13-4 deficit to take a 17-13 lead before Elon responded with the last five runs of the game to pick up an 18-17 Coastal Athletic Association victory Saturday at University Field. The Phoenix scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead.

Hofstra dropped to 14-33 overall and 4-16 in CAA play with the loss. Elon is 22-25 overall and 11-9 in the CAA.

Michael Brown went 4-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Hofstra, while Dylan Palmer went 4-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Trent Jenks had a 3-5, three-run, three-RBI day, while Michael Craig was 3-6 with a run scored. Nick Biddle, Tyler Castrataro, and Nick Gallello each had two hits on the day. Castrataro homered and drove in three runs. Gallello knocked in a pair and Biddle scored twice. 

Hofstra scored 13 unanswered runs to take the lead. The Pride scored eight times in the fifth to make it a 13-12 game and then took the lead with a three-run fifth. Aiden Gallagher tied the game with a long double off the fence in right field and, two batters later, Gallello put the Pride ahead with a two-run single. Castrataro would homer in the sixth, a two-run blast that made it 17-13 in favor of the Pride. 

A pair of Hofstra errors led to a run in the seventh for Elon before the Phoenix struck for four more in the eighth. Justin Szestowicki capped off a six-RBI day with a two-run triple. He would score on a groundout to tie the game at 17 before Jackson Alford hit a solo home run, which proved to be the game winner. 

Owen Winebarger (3-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing no hits or runs over 1 â…” innings. Sam Nomura pitched the final two innings for his third save. Hofstra reliever Christian Rasmussen (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 1 â…” innings.

Szetowicki went 3-4 with a home run, three runs, and six RBIs on the day. Kenny Mallory Jr. had four hits, three runs, and three RBIs.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m.

Notes:
-Gallello's two RBIs were the first of his career.
-Brown's four hits were a career-best.
-Michael Heyman (1 ⅓) and Brayden Gregg (1 ⅔) combined for three scoreless innings.
