Hofstra Falls To Elon In Series Openner

Hempstead, NY - Ryan Sprock homered and drove in four runs, and pitched the final two innings to earn a save to back Justin Mitrovich's seven-inning, one-hit effort as Elon picked up a 5-0 victory over Hofstra Friday at University Field.

The victory upped Elon's record to 21-25 overall and 10-9 in Coastal Athletic Association play. Hofstra dropped to 14-32 overall and 4-15 in league action.

Sprock drove in Elon's first run of the game with a first inning single and then capped the scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. The utility man started the game at third before taking the mound in the eighth inning. He allowed one hit and two walks, all in the ninth as Hofstra loaded the bases. But Sprock ended the game with a strikeout to notch his third save of the season.

Mitrovich cruised through seven innings, taking a no-hitter into his final frame before CJ Griggs doubled with two outs to spoil it. The Elon righty walked two and struck out five.

Hofstra starter Sean Hamilton (0-4) pitched well, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings. Grady Lacourciere pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs.

In addition to Griggs' double, Dylan Palmer added a ninth-inning single and a stolen base. The stolen base was the 72nd of his career, tying him with Andy Campana (2004-07) for second all-time at Hofstra.

Hofstra and Elon will continue the series Saturday with a 12 p.m. first pitch.

Notes:
-Hamilton's seven inning outing was the longest of his career.
-Griggs extended his hitting streak to four games.
