Strong Pitching, Early Offense Carries Hofstra Past UNCW

Hempstead, NY - Starter Tristan Nemjo went seven-plus innings and reliever Tanner Sanderoff closed out the game with two scoreless innings, while Michael Craig and Michael Brown each drove in two runs as Hofstra salvaged the final game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series against UNCW, 6-4, Saturday at University Field.

Hofstra improved to 12-20 overall and 3-6 in the CAA with the victory, while the Seahawks moved to 16-16 overall and 4-5 in league play with the loss.

The Pride scored in each of the first four innings to build a 6-1 lead. Craig plated two runs in the bottom of the first with a double to right, winning a 13-pitch battle against UNCW starter Cam Bagwell (5-1). In the second, Brown delivered a two-run double down the right field line for a 4-0 lead.

Mac Gillespie homered in the top of the third inning to put UNCW on the board, but the Pride answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a CJ Griggs triple that drove in Craig, who had singled. Tyler Cox extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth with an RBI single that drove in Nick Biddle, who led off the inning with a single.

The Seahawks got a run on the board in the sixth on a Kevin Jones RBI single and then added two more in the seventh on Tanner Thach's home run over the centerfield fence.

Nemjo (1-3) went a career-high seven innings to get his first win of the season, pitching into the eighth inning. The fifth-year righty scattered eight hits and allowed four runs. The first two batters of the eighth reached base, one on an error and the second on a sharp single, which prompted a call to the bullpen for Sanderoff. The left-handed reliever induced a double play groundout and then got a foul pop up to escape the jam. Sanderoff then struck out the side in the ninth, working around a walk, to notch his first save.

Biddle led the Hofstra offense with three hits and scored twice. Craig and Griggs each had two hits.

Gillespie, Jones, and Cole Nelson had two hits each for the Seahawks. Bagwell, who threw a perfect game earlier this season, was charged with five runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Baker Cox allowed one run on four hits over 2 ⅔ innings, while Cooper Allen went the final 2 ⅓ innings without allowing a hit.

Hofstra will return to action Wednesday at Connecticut with a 3:05 p.m. start time. The Pride was scheduled to host FDU Tuesday but that game has been canceled.

Notes:
-The win was Nemjo's first since May 7, 2023, as he missed all of last season due to injury.
-Griggs' triple was his first of the season.
-Dylan Palmer extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single.
-Hofstra is 19-45 all-time against UNCW.
