Hofstra Downs Delaware Behind Strong Pitching Performances

Newark, DE - Jackson Bauer struck out a season-high eight batters and Sean Lane gave Hofstra the lead for good with a third inning home run as the Pride picked up a 6-2 Coastal Athletic Association victory over Delaware Saturday night at Bob Hannah Stadium. The win evened the three-game series at one game apiece.

Hofstra improved to 14-29 overall and 4-13 in the CAA with the win, which snapped a five-game losing skid. Delaware slipped to 23-18 overall and 9-8 in the CAA.

The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the second with a leadoff home run from Evan Bouldin. The Pride came right back and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Hofstra manufactured a run to tie the game as Mike Sweeney led off with a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a ground ball to the right side and scored on a sacrifice fly from Luke Masiuk. Lane gave the Pride the lead with a two-run opposite field home run to right that scored Michael Brown, who had walked.

Delaware loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and scored once on a double play grounder to make it a one-run game. The score remained that way until the sixth when pinch-hitter CJ Griggs laced a two-out single to drive in Masiuk, who reached after being hit by a pitch. Hofstra would add another run in the eighth on a single off the right field wall by Dom Camera. Michael Brown drove in the Pride's final run with a ninth inning single.

Bauer (3-6) allowed two runs on four hits over 6 ⅓ innings before yielding to Christian Rasmussen, who tossed 1 ⅔ innings and allowed one hit. Tanner Sanderoff came on in the ninth with a runner on first and struck out the side to seal the win.

Lane finished 2-5 on the night. Masiuk went 1-2, was on base three times and scored two runs.

Delaware starter Elias Conway (2-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits over three innings. Aaron Graeber went 3-4 for the Blue Hens.

The teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time.
