Delaware Pulls Away Late To Take Series Opener

Newark, DE - Aaron Graeber's solo home run leading off the bottom of the fourth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and propelled Delaware to an 11-3 victory over Hofstra Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue Hens added seven runs in their final two turns at bat.

Hofstra fell to 13-29 overall and 3-13 in the CAA with the loss. Delaware is 23-17 overall and 9-7 in the CAA. 

The Pride took leads in the first and third innings only to see the Blue Hens answer in their turns at bat. Luke Masiuk gave the Pride a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his ninth home run of the season. Delaware tied it in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk to Andrew Amato. In the third, Masiuk drove in his second run with a fielder's choice ground out. The Pride's third run came on an error on a pickoff attempt of Masiuk that allowed Dylan Palmer to score. The lead was short-lived as Aiden Stewart led off the Delaware third with a single and Evan Bouldin followed with a home run to tie the score once again. 

Following Graeber's home run, Delaware added two more runs in the seventh inning and five in the eighth to pull away. Brett Lesher had an RBI single and Tanner Donati added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Blue Hens loaded the bases in the eighth, scoring runs on a bases loaded walk and a hit batter before Graeber cleared the bases with a double to right field to extend the lead to an 11-3 lead. 

Bryce Curry had two of Hofstra's three hits including a double. Masiuk recorded one hit and two RBIs. Graeber was 3-6 with four RBIs for Delaware. 

Justin Needles (4-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Dom Velasquez went the final three frames to record his third save. Danny Kelleher (2-1) took the loss in relief for Hofstra, allowing a run on two hits with four strikeouts in 2 â…“ innings.

The teams continue the series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

-Hofstra struck out a season high 13 batters.
-Nick Biddle walked three times and scored a run.
