Stony Brook Rallies Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Tyler Castrataro and Luke Masiuk homered for Hofstra in a five-run third inning, but Stony Brook rallied in the top of the fourth and went to post a 7-5 victory Saturday at University Field. The win gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead in the Coastal Athletic Association series. 

Hofstra dropped to 13-26 overall and 3-11 in the CAA with the loss. Stony Brook moved to 19-16 overall and 7-7 in league play.

The Seawolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning as Matt Micelli had an RBI single, Nick Zampieron had an RBI double, and Erik Paulsen a two-run single.

Hofstra responded with five in the third. Castrataro led off with a home run to centerfield and, following a one-out double from Dylan Palmer, Nick Biddle delivered an RBI single. A single from CJ Griggs put runners on first and second for Masiuk, who turned on the first pitch he saw from Ty Panariello and deposited over the left field wall to give the Pride a 5-4 lead. 

Stony Brook wasted no time in retaking the lead as a walk, a sacrifice and another walk put runners on first and second for Nico Azpilcueta. The Seawolves designated hitter hit a three-run home run to left center to give the visitors a 7-5 lead they would not relinquish.

Jackson Bauer (2-6) started for the Pride and allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings. Jacob Perdersen (2-2) got the win in relief for Stony Brook after allowing no runs on two hits over 5 ⅔ innings.

Palmer finished 2-4 with a run scored for Hofstra. Biddle was also 2-4 with an RBI and a run. Azpilcueta was 3-5 with a home run and two doubles for Stony Brook. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 12 p.m. start.

Notes:
-Danny Kelleher was outstanding in relief for the Pride, allowing one hit over five scoreless innings.
-Palmer extended his hitting streak to 22 games and moved into a tie for fourth place all-time in career hits at Hofstra with 225. 
-Hofstra is 20-22 all-time versus Stony Brook.
