Hofstra Drops Series Opener To Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY - Dylan Palmer went 3-4 with two RBIs and set the Hofstra career and single season triples record, but Stony Brook jumped on the Pride early and went on to post a 17-3 win Friday in the opening game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series at University Field. 

Palmer hit his 11th career triple and his sixth of the season with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a tie in each category with Ricky Caputo. It was Palmer's third three-bagger in his last two games. 

Stony Brook (18-16, 6-7 CAA) scored eight times in the second inning and five more in the third to take a 13-0 lead.Brett Davino had a three-run home run in the second and Chanz Doughty hit a grand slam. In the Seawolves five-run third, Chris Carson had a two-run home run and Erik Paulsen added a two-run single. 

Nick Biddle drove in Hofstra's first run as he doubled in Dom Camera, who had doubled earlier in the frame. In the seventh, the Pride (13-25, 3-10 CAA) got two-out singles from Mike Sweeney and Jake Harring in front of Palmer, who sent a 1-0 pitch into the right field corner for his milestone hit. 

Stony Brook starter Eddie Smink (1-3) went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked none and struck out four. Hofstra starter Sean Hamilton (0-3) allowed eight runs on five hits over 1 ⅔ innings. 

The teams continue their series Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
