Masiuk's Two Grand Slams Power Hofstra Past UAlbany

Hempstead, NY - Luke Masiuk hit a school single game record two grand slams, and was one off the program record for RBIs in a game with eight, to back the combined shutout efforts of starter Jackson Bauer and reliever Michael Heyman as the Pride posted a 20-0 victory over UAlbany Sunday to salvage the finale of a three-game series. The 20 runs were a season-high and matched the most runs scored in Head Coach Frank Catalanotto's three-plus season tenure. Hofstra moved to 5-9 with the win, while UAlbany saw its record even at 5-5.

Bauer (1-2) notched his first win with five scoreless frames, allowing two singles and one walk, with a season-best six strikeouts. Heyman went the final two innings with the game called after seven due to the run rule. The freshman right-hander allowed two singles and struck out two. In addition to Masiuk's big day at the plate, Trenton Snyder had two hits, a two-run home run and a two-run double, while Michael Craig collected his first three collegiate hits and drove in two runs. Bryce Curry added a pair of hits and two RBIs, Tyler Cox had a two-run single and three walks, and Dylan Palmer picked up three hits and a run scored.

Hofstra would score all they would need in the first inning as Masiuk launched his first grand slam, a one-out shot over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead. The Pride would score nine runs in the fourth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. Snyder had both his hits in the inning as he started the outburst with a two-run home run to left center and capped it with a two-RBI double to left.

The Pride added three more runs in the fifth with Craig and Curry notching RBI singles, and Masiuk closed the scoring with his second grand slam, also to left field, in the sixth.

Great Danes starter Ryan Pitzz (0-2) took the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits in 3 ⅓ innings of work.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at home versus Fairfield. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
