Hofstra Drops Close Game To UAlbany

Hempstead, NY - The University at Albany scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and held on for a 4-2 victory over Hofstra Friday in the opening game of three at University Field. Hofstra had the tying run on base in the ninth before a game-ending double play.

The Pride slipped to 4-8 with the loss, while the Great Danes evened their record at 4-4.

Hofstra opened the scoring in the third inning as Dom Camera led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Camera would then come in on Dylan Palmer's groundout to short. UAlbany tied the game in the fifth without a hit as back-to-back walks and a double steal put runners at second and third. Cooper Loyal followed with an RBI groundout.

The score remained tied until the seventh when the Great Danes loaded the bases with no outs. Michael Maggio led off with a double. John Vitucci followed with a walk and Loyal reached on a bunt single. Playing the infield in, Hofstra was able to cut down a runner at the plate on a fielder's choice but Ryan Ferremi delivered a two-run single. Two batters later, Logan Morris drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Hofstra got a run back in the eighth on an RBI single from Tyler Castrataro that plated Michael Brown, who had singled and went to second on a groundout. Then in the ninth, Trenton Snyder drew a leadoff walk. Following a lineout to center for the first out, Luke Masiuk lifted a fly ball to shallow right field. Great Danes second baseman Luke Myers made a nice running catch and was able to throw back to first to double off Snyder for the final out.

Hofstra starter Tristan Nemjo went 3 ⅓ hitless and scoreless innings before getting lifted for Brayden Gregg (2-1). The freshman reliever allowed four runs on four hits with three walks in three innings. Danny Kelleher pitched the final 2 ⅔, allowing a hit and a walk.

UAlbany starter Dylan Banner (1-0) twirled a gem, allowing two runs on six hits over eight innings. He walked one and struck out six. Thomas Quinn pitched the ninth to earn his first save.

The series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
