Hofstra Rallies To Defeat Marist In Home Opener

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and went on to post an 11-7 victory over Marist Tuesday in the Pride's home opener at University Field. Hofstra rallied from deficits of 3-0 in the first inning and 5-4 in the fourth inning.

The Pride (4-7) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, while Marist dropped to 2-9 overall and saw a two-game win streak halted.

Freshman pitcher Grady Lacourciere (1-0) notched his first career win, while classmate Trent Jenks picked up his first career save. Lacourciere allowed two runs on four hits over 3 ⅔ innings of relief and struck out four Marist batters. Jenks, who started the game in left field, went the final 1 ⅓ innings and allowed one hit.

Trailing 4-1 after the top of the third, the Pride scored three times in the bottom of the inning to knot things at four. Hofstra loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single before Jenks knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and freshman catcher CJ Griggs tied it with a two-run double.

After Kyle Pollack homered for Marist to lead off the fourth, Hofstra came back once again. The Pride tied the game in the fifth on Griggs' RBI single and then went ahead to stay in the sixth. Luke Masiuk reached on an error to start the inning and stole second. Sean Lane followed with a bloop single to right to score Masiuk with the go-ahead run. Lane then showed his base-running acumen as he went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt from Michael Brown. The play paid dividends as Dylan Palmer followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5. Freshman Tyler Castrataro then launched his second home run of the season to give the Pride a three-run cushion.

The home run proved to be important as Marist got two runs back in the seventh on a home run from Brady Steinert to cut the Red Foxes deficit to one, 8-7. But that was all the scoring Marost would do as Lacourciere and Jenks were rock solid the rest of the way and the Pride would tack on three insurance runs in the eighth. Masiuk doubled, went to third on a Lane sacrifice, and scored on a Brown double. Palmer singled home Brown and would later score on the front end of a double steal.

Marist's Ty Morris (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits in one-plus innings of work. Steinert finished the day 3-4 with four RBIs for the Red Foxes.

Palmer, Castrataro, Griggs, and Lane each had two hits for the Pride, with Griggs (3) and Palmer (2) recording multi-RBI contests.

Hofstra returns to action Friday at 2 p.m. in the opening game of a three-game home series against the University at Albany.
