William & Mary Rallies Past Hofstra In Series Opener

Williamsburg, VA - William & Mary scored five runs over their final two turns at bat to take a 10-9 win over Hofstra in the opening game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series at Plumeri Park. Tyler Cox and Luke Masiuk had home runs for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 10-15 overall and 2-2 in the CAA with the loss. William & Mary is 8-17 overall and 2-2 in league action. 

The Pride rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a five-run fifth inning. Cox had the big hit, a three-run home run that gave Hofstra a 6-4 lead. The teams traded runs in the sixth before the Pride went up 9-5 in the seventh on a solo home run from Masiuk and an RBI double from Michael Craig. 

The Tribe would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, two on a Derek Holmes double, to get within one. Carter Lovasz came on to pitch for William & Mary and kept Hofstra off the board in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Jamie Laskofski led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following another out, Ben Parker tied the score with a single and then went to second on a balk. Anthony Greco then singled through the right side to score Parker with what proved to be the winning run. Lovasz (2-3) struck out the side in the ninth to secure the Tribe's win. 

Brayden Gregg (2-3) took the loss in relief for the Pride. The freshman left-hander went the final two innings and allowed a pair of runs on four hits. 

The teams will continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Mike Sweeney had two hits and an RBI for the Pride.
-Cox had two hits and three RBIs.
-Dylan Palmer had one hit, leaving him two shy of 200 career hits.
