Griggs, Sanderoff Key Hofstra Comeback Win

Hempstead, NY - CJ Griggs had the go-ahead pinch hit single in the bottom of the eighth inning and Tanner Sanderoff pitched two scoreless frames as Hofstra rallied to defeat Seton Hall, 13-12, Tuesday at University Field. Hofstra, which led 7-1 after three innings, came back from a 12-8 deficit over their final two turns at bat.

The Pride improved to 10-14 with the win, while the Pirates dropped to 9-15 with the loss.

Entering the bottom of the seventh trailing 12-8, Hofstra put up three runs to make it a one-run game. Sean Lane started the rally off with a single and moved to second on an error. A ground ball out sent Lane to third and he scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Mike Sweeney. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Michael Brown singled in Nick Biddle to make it 12-10. Luke Masiuk followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Dylan Palmer.

Sanderoff (1-0) came on to start the eighth and worked around a walk and a hit batsman to give the Pride a chance in the eighth. Lane once again was the rally starter with a two-out double. A pair of hit batters loaded the bases and set the stage for Griggs to be the hero. The freshman took a 2-1 pitch from Anthony Ehly (0-2) up the middle to score pinch-runner Trenton Snyder with the tying run and Michael Craig with the go-ahead run. Sanderoff made it stand, though not without a little drama. Jimmy Brennan led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on throwing error on the play. But the Pride's sophomore left-hander retired the final three batters on a strikeout, a groundout and a pitch clock violation strikeout to strand the tying run at third and pick up his first win of the season.

The Hofstra offense collected 17 hits on the day with Palmer, Brown, and Lane each having three. Craig had two hits and three RBIs on the day, while Palmer, Brown, Sweeney, and Griggs each had two RBIs.

AJ Soldra had three hits and two RBIs for the Pirates, while Marc Ali drove in three runs. Ehly took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1 â…“ innings of work.

Hofstra returns to action Friday at William & Mary in the opening game of a three-game CAA series.
