Hofstra Downs Monmouth In Extra Innings; Clinch CAA Series Win

West Long Branch, NJ - Luke Masiuk drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning to snap an 11-11 tie and Hofstra held on for a 13-12 Coastal Athletic Association victory over Monmouth Saturday at the MU Baseball Stadium. The single capped a three-hit, three RBI day for the senior right fielder.

With the win, Hofstra clinched the series and improved to 9-13 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. Monmouth dropped to 9-13 overall and 0-2 in conference action. The Hawks have dropped three games in a row.

Hofstra led 8-5 after five innings before the Hawks used a six-run sixth to take their first lead, 11-8. But Hofstra came back in the eighth, scoring three runs. A leadoff walk by Sean Lane and a single from Bryce Curry put runners on first and third. Dylan Palmer then slapped an opposite field double to left that scored pinch-runner Trenton Snyder and an error on the play allowed pinch-runner Jack Fanning to score as well. Tyler Castrataro followed with a single to center that brought in Palmer with the tying run.

In the 10th, Mike Sweeney led off with a double and came in to score on Masiuk's RBI single. Following a walk to Tyler Cox, Nick Biddle singled to right and a fielding error allowed Masiuk to score. The insurance run proved to be huge as the Hawks did not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. A walk and a double put runners at second and third and Chris Walsh brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Monmouth would get the tying run on third and the winning run on first following a Hofstra throwing error, but Danny Kelleher struck out Brendan Bueker looking to end the game.

Kelleher (2-0) earned the win after allowing a run on one hit in 2 ⅓ innings. Jake Danyluk (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning.

Masiuk finished 3-6 with two doubles, a single, and three RBIs. Cox went 3-5 with three RBIs, while Palmer, Castrataro, Michael Brown, and CJ Griggs each had two-hit games.

The teams conclude the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
