Hofstra Wins CAA Opener At Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ - Jackson Bauer went six solid innings and Dylan Palmer went 3-4 with two RBIs as Hofstra opened Coastal Athletic Association play with an 8-6 win over Monmouth Friday at the MU Baseball Field. The win snapped a short two-game losing streak for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 8-13 overall and 1-0 in CAA play with the win. Monmouth is 9-12 overall and 0-1 in the CAA.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first following a walk, a single and a safety squeeze from Chris Walsh. Hofstra would score two runs in the top of the second as Michael Craig had a sacrifice fly and Luke Masiuk scored on a throwing error. Monmouth replied with two unearned runs in the second, taking advantage of a Hofstra throwing error.

The Pride would go ahead for good in the fourth, scoring four times on five hits. Tyler Cox and Luke Masiuk had back to back singles ahead of an RBI single from CJ Griggs. A walk to Craig loaded the bases and Bryce Curry reached on an infield single to put the Pride up by a 4-3 count. Palmer capped the inning with a two-run single for a 6-3 advantage.

Monmouth was able to make it a 6-5 game in the seventh as Walsh had an RBI fielder's choice and another run came in on a wild pitch. But Hofstra added two more insurance runs in the eighth as Craig hustled to beat out a potential double play grounder to drive in a run. The final run came in on a designed rundown play as Craig was picked off first but not before pinch runner Trenton Snyder scored from third.

Bauer scattered eight hits and had six strikeouts to improve to 2-2 on the season. Trent Jenks pitched the final two innings, allowing a run, to notch his second save.

The series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
