John Madsen scored the game-winner with 1:59 left in the second overtime as the Hofstra men's lacrosse team captured an instant classic over Stony Brook, 13-12, on Saturday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Anthony Mollica, who assisted Madsen on the game-winner, posted four points on three goals and an assist.
Trey Parkes tied him for game and team-high honors with his four points on two goals and two assists.
Madsen, who finished with two goals in the game, had the 100th point of his career earlier in the contest and added to his special evening with the double overtime tally.
Hofstra improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in CAA play with the victory. Stony Brook dropped to 4-4 and 0-1 in league play with the loss.
Mollica scored Hofstra's first three goals, all in the first quarter, and was aided by a goal from
Trevor Natalie with 51 seconds left in the opening stanza to stake the Pride to a 4-2 advantage. The Pride would take a 5-4 lead into the halftime break as Madsen found the back of the net with 10:05 left in the second quarter to break a four-all tie and neither defense would allow a goal the remainder of the half.
The two teams combined for nine goals in an entertaining third quarter with Stony Brook breaking an 8-8 tie with two goals in the final minute to take a 10-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Hofstra battled back and goals from
Rory Jones and Parkes tied it at 10. After the Seawolves took their final lead at 12-11 with 3:19 left on a goal from Kian McCoy,
Drew Bogardus would send the game to overtime as he scored off an assist from Parkes with 90 seconds remaining in regulation.
Following a scoreless first overtime, Madsen would end the night and send the Pride faithful home victorious with his 16th goal of the season off the assist from Mollica.
Natalie had a hat trick for the Pride, which also got three points on two goals and an assist from Bogardus. Mollica added a team-high three ground balls, while
Will Delaney posted two ground balls and a game-high nine caused turnovers.
Shea Kennedy earned his fourth win of the season and made nine saves in the contest.
Stony Brook got two goals apiece from Caleb Yeung, McCoy, and Richie DeChiaro. Jamison MacLachlan made 11 saves for the Seawolves.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Monmouth for a 12 p.m. contest. That game will air on FloCollege.
NOTES
- Hofstra now holds a 9-6 advantage over Stony Brook in the all-time series. The Pride has won two straight, three of the last four, five of the last eight encounters.
- The game was Hofstra's longest since a triple overtime contest against #16 Drexel on May 3, 2014.
- Hofstra is 2-0 this season in overtime and has won three straight overtime games dating back to last season.
- Madsen is the second Hofstra player to cross the 100-point milestone this season as
Rory Jones reached the century mark back on February 7.
- Mollica's hat trick was his third this season and sixth of his career.
- Natalie's hat trick was his third this season and also the third of his career.
