Aranguren Pours In Career-High 35 Points Versus Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Jean Aranguren scored a career-high 35 points, including 25 in the second half, but Hofstra came up short in a 77-68 loss to Northeastern Thursday night in a Coastal Athletic Association game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The Pride slipped to 12-12 overall and 4-7 in the CAA with the loss. The Huskies moved to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the CAA with the win.

Aranguren was 9-13 from the floor and 14-18 from the free throw line in surpassing his previous high of 25 points set earlier this season against SUNY Old Westbury. The sophomore guard also had 10 rebounds and two steals in the game. Cruz Davis was the only other Pride player in double-figures with 18 points. He also added seven assists. Michael Graham tied for team-high honors with 10 rebounds.

Hofstra trailed 36-29 at halftime as the Huskies closed out the opening 20 minutes on an 8-0 run. Aranguren led all scorers with 10 points in the half. Before the half-closing run by the Huskies, neither team led by more than three and there were four tie scores and 10 lead changes.

The second half saw the Huskies extend the lead to nine, 40-31, nearly two minutes in on a Harold Woods jumper. But a free throw from Davis and a three-pointer from TJ Gadsden brought the Pride within five with 17:13 on the clock. An Aranguren layup made it a four-point game, 46-42, with 14:35 to play. Davis' two free throws a little over a minute later made the score, 46-44. Northeastern responded with a 5-0 run to go back up by seven, 51-44, following a Woods free throw. Trailing by six, 56-50, Aranguren drained six consecutive free throws to tie the game at 56 with just over 5:00 to play. The Huskies answered with a 6-1 spurt to take a 62-57 lead on Rashad King's jumper in the paint with 3:01 on the clock. The lead would grow to eight, 67-59, with just over a minute to go. Aranguren would hit three three-pointers in the final 60 seconds, but Northeastern went 10-10 from the line down the stretch to thwart Hofstra's comeback attempt.

King led the Huskies with 28 points, while La Pratt chipped in with 14 points. Woods had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pride is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Stony Brook as part of Hofstra Winter Homecoming. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. and there will be a pregame tailgate in the Mack Physical Education Center from 1-3:30 p.m. The game will air on MSG Network, FloCollege, and WRHU (HAWC). With the game nearing a sellout, fans are urged to call the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office at (516) HOF-TIXX or stop by the ticket office in the lobby of the Mack Sports Complex during normal business hours on Friday.
