Hofstra Tripped Up By LIU

Farmingdale, NY - Tyler Castrataro went 3-3 with a home run, triple, and single, and drove in four runs, but Hofstra could not overcome an early 9-0 deficit in a 12-8 loss to LIU Tuesday at the Farmingdale State Baseball Complex. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Pride.

Hofstra slipped to 3-4 with the loss, while the Sharks moved to 3-6 on the season. The victory ended LIU's four-game losing skid.

The Sharks sent 11 men to the plate during a seven-run second inning. Matthew McGurk had a two-run double and Jack Power had a two-run home run in the inning. The lead grew to 9-0 in the third on Ben Fierenzi's two-run single.

Hofstra got on the board in the third as Tyler Cox singled in Dylan Palmer. The Pride pulled within four, 9-5, with a four-run fourth inning that featured two run home runs from Sean Lane and Castrataro. After LIU pushed a run across in the fifth to take a 10-5 lead, the Pride scored three times in the eighth. Castrataro had a two-run triple and then scored on Palmer's groundout. However, the Sharks scored twice more in the top of the ninth on a solo home run from Power and an RBI base hit from McGurk.

Brian Hart (0-1) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing three runs on one hit in an inning-plus. Dom Vassallo (1-0) was credited with the win in relief, allowing two hits over 1 ⅔ innings. Evan Panjwani earned his second save with 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless work.
