Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short In Loss At No. 23 Kentucky

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra's three-run ninth inning made it a two-run game and the Pride had the tying run on base before No. 23 Kentucky escaped the jam for a 7-5 victory Friday evening at Kentucky Proud Park. Luke Masiuk was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Pride, while Dylan Palmer had a two-run triple in the ninth and scored a run as well.

Hofstra slipped to 3-5 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 7-1 with their sixth consecutive win.

Masiuk gave Hofstra a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single that scored Tyler Castrataro, who led off the inning with a single and moved to second when CJ Griggs was hit by a pitch. Kentucky would take a 2-1 lead in the third as Luke Lawrence homered and Cole Hage stole home.

The Pride would tie the score in the fourth inning as two walks and an error loaded the bases for Masiuk, who would drive in Griggs with a fielder's choice. Kentucky answered with a two-run fifth and added two more runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. Hofstra would rally in the ninth as Masiuk led off with a double. Pinch hitter Trent Jenks' single put runners and the corner for Palmer, who tripled into the left field corner to make it 7-4. Jake Harring followed with an infield single that plated Palmer. However, Kentucky pitcher Simon Gregersen regrouped to get the next two batters. He put the tying run on base with a walk to Griggs, but got a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Hofstra starter Jackson Bauer (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Grady Lacourciere went the final 3 2/3 and allowed three runs on two hits.

Kentucky reliever Evan Byers (1-0) was credited with the win after getting the final two outs in the fifth inning. Hage had three hits and two RBIs for the Wildcats, while Lawrence had two hits and two RBIs.

The teams continue the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
