Hofstra Sweeps Doubleheader From Iona

Farmingdale, NY - Freshman reliever Brayden Gregg picked up the win in both ends of the doubleheader as Hofstra rallied in both games to complete a three-game sweep of Iona at Farmingdale State University's Baseball Complex Sunday. The Pride won game one, 10-9, in 13 innings and took game two, 3-1. Hofstra moved to 3-3 on the season with the sweep. Iona dropped to 1-4.

In the opener, Hofstra rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the seventh and a 9-7 deficit in the eighth inning before winning in the 13th inning. Tyler Cox hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to bring Hofstra within one, 7-6, and after Sean Lane doubled, freshman Tyler Castrataro drove in pinch runner Jake Harring with a single to tie the game. After Iona plated two runs in the eighth, the Pride rallied once again with Luke Masiuk driving in a run with a groundout and Cox tied it with a single through the right side.

The score remained tied until the 13th when Masiuk led off with a double. Following a walk to Cox, pinch hitter Aidan Gallagher moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. The Gaels chose to walk Harring intentionally to load the bases and Catstrataro followed with a walk-off single to left that scored Masiuk with the winning run.

Gregg picked up the first win of his career after recording a strikeout to record the last out of the top of the 13th inning.

In game two, Michael Brown's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth snapped a 1-1 tie and Gregg (2-0) worked around a pair of singles in the top of the seventh to record the win again. He pitched 2 ⅓ innings, allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Hofstra had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single from Cox. The Gaels tied it in the fifth when Sean Stephenson delivered an RBI double. That set the stage for the Pride's rally in the sixth. Castrataro started it with a single and Masiuk was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Following a strikeout for the second out, Brown drove a 1-2 pitch up the middle to score both runners.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game against LIU at Farmingdale State.

Notes:
-Trent Jenks (1 ⅔) and Danny Kelleher (3 ⅔) pitched 5 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief in game one, each recording a pair of strikeouts.
-Cox was 3-9 with four RBIs on the day.
-Castrataro was 3-8 with a pair of RBIs
-Hofstra is 19-20 all-time against Iona.
