Walk Off Wild Pitch Gives Hofstra Extra Inning Win Over Iona

Farmingdale, NY - Hofstra tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a passed ball and then scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a wild pitch as the Pride picked up an 8-7 victory over Iona at the Farmingdale State Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon. The win was Hofstra's first of the season as the Pride moved to 1-3. Iona slipped to 1-2.

Hofstra opened a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning as Dylan Palmer had an RBI infield single and Luke Masiuk blasted a three-run home run. Iona would push a run across in the fifth and then had a four-run sixth to take a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly from Damian Rodriguez. JC Frias had a two-run home run in the frame, while Matt Wessels added an RBI triple. Michael Brown tied the game for Hofstra in the bottom of the sixth with a double that scored Nick Gallello, who had reached on an error to start the inning.

The score remained that way until the top of the ninth when Iona went up by one as Braize Mitchell's two-out single drove home Sean Stephenson with the go-ahead run. Palmer keyed the Hofstra rally in the bottom of the inning as he led off with an infield single, stole second, went to third on an error on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a passed ball.

Hofstra freshman pitcher Trent Jenks (1-0) came on in the 10th and kept Iona off the board, recording three fly ball outs. That set the stage for the Pride to win in the bottom of the inning. Sean Lane was hit by a pitch to lead off and was pinch run for by Jake Harring. The freshman moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on groundout. Iona pitcher Matt Zguro (0-1) picked up the second out of the inning before uncorking a wild pitch that allowed Harring to score the winning run.

Palmer was 3-5 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored. Masiuk and Gallello each scored a pair of runs. Starting pitcher Jackson Bauer went 5 ⅓ innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Grady Lacourciere followed with 3 ⅔ innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts before giving way to Jenks.

Iona starter Brendan Callanan gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings. Sean Davis followed with three innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit. Tyler Lender also allowed an unearned run on one hit in two innings before Zguro came on and was charged with an earned run in ⅔ of an inning.

Stephenson had three hits for Iona, while Mitchell and Wessels each had two.

The teams conclude the weekend series Sunday at 11 a.m. with a doubleheader. The game will once again be played at Farmingdale State College.
