Hofstra Tripped Up By Monmouth In Final Seconds

Hempstead, NY - German Plotnikov scored a game and season-high 19 points to lead Hofstra, but Monmouth's Andrew Ball hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds to play to snap a 61-61 tie as the Hawks went on to post a 68-62 Coastal Athletic Association victory over the Pride Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra slipped to 12-16 overall and 4-11 in CAA play with the loss. Monmouth improved to 10-18 overall and 8-7 in league action with the win. 

The Pride would never trail in the first half, building a 16-point advantage, 36-20, with 5:04 to play on a Jaquan Sanders three-pointer. Monmouth would score the final seven points of the half to trail by nine, 36-27, at the half. 

Hofstra would push the lead back to double-digits early in the second half, leading by 12 following a Plotnikov three-pointer nearly two minutes in. Monmouth would cut the lead to two, 45-43, with just over 13 minutes to play on a three-pointer from Abdi Bashir Jr. Hofstra would build its advantage back to eight points, 56-48, on Michael Graham's tip-in with 6:28 remaining. 

The Hawks would use a 15-5 run to tie the game at 61 on a pair of Ball free throws with 1:23 on the clock.Both teams would have empty possessions before Ball drained what proved to be the game-winning shot from the right wing. It was Monmouth's first lead of the game. Monmouth would hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds to secure the win. 

Plotnikov was 6-9 from the floor and missed tying his career high by one point. He also added three assists in the contest. Silas Sunday added 11 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in 13 minutes off the bench. Graham had a game-best eight rebounds. 

Madison Durr led Monmouth with 19 points, while Jack Collins chipped in with 14. Durr was 15-18 from the free throw line. Collins and Ball each had six rebounds to pace the Hawks. 

Hofstra returns to action Saturday at Delaware. Tip-off in Newark is set for 4 p.m.

-The series between Hofstra and Monmouth is tied at 8-8. 
-Sunday was 5-5 from the floor, while Graham was 3-3.
-Hofstra celebrated Academic Excellence Night and recognized student-athletes and spirit support team members for their outstanding academic achievements. 
-The Pride have dropped six consecutive games. 
-Plotnikov is 22 points shy of 500 in his career.
