Hofstra Drops Series Finale At No. 2/4 Tennessee

Knoxville, TN - Brayden Gregg had four strikeouts in two innings of relief in his collegiate debut as Hofstra wrapped up a season-opening series at defending National Champion and No. 2/4 ranked Tennessee with a 13-1 loss at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Pride moved to 0-3, while the Volunteers improved to 3-0 on the season.

Hofstra took their first lead in the series in the top of the first as Jake Harring led off with a bunt single, stole second, went to third on an infield out, and scored on a Bryce Curry sacrifice fly. The Volunteers came right back in the bottom of the inning as Dean Curley led off with a single up the middle that was misplayed in the outfield for a two-base error. Curley would then tie the game as he came home on a wild pitch. Tennessee would load the bases and push across three more runs on RBI singles from Cannon Peebles and Stone Lawless, and a groundout from Reese Chapman.

The Volunteers blew the game open with eight runs in the second, the big blow a grand slam home run off the bat of Chapman. Tennessee would score just once more as freshman relievers Grady Lacourciere and Gregg kept the Volunteer batters off the board.

Starter Branden Brown (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 runs (9 earned) in 1 â…“ innings of work. Lacourciere surrendered the grand slam to Chapman and allowed one other run before settling down over 2 â…” innings. Gregg went the final two frames and allowed one run. Harring, Tyler Cox, Sean Lane (double), and Luke Masiuk each had hits for the Pride.

Reliever Andrew Behnke (1-0) was credited with the win for Tennessee, allowing no runs on one hit in a scoreless fourth inning. Chapman drove in five runs to pace the Volunteer offense.

Hofstra returns home Friday to host Iona in the opening game of a three-game series at 2 p.m.
