Golden Hour! Goddard Sends Hofstra To Third Round With Overtime Winner

Burlington, VT - Laurie Goddard scored the golden goal 6:18 into the first overtime as Hofstra toppled top-seeded and defending National Champion Vermont, 3-2, Sunday at Virtue Field in the second round of the NCAA Championship. The win snapped a 29-game unbeaten streak for the Catamounts.

Hofstra, which advanced to the third round of the NCAA's for the second time in program history, improved to 14-5-0 on the season. Vermont suffered its first loss of the season and ended the year at 14-1-5.

The Catamounts opened the scoring at 12:37 when Philipp Kuhn, sitting at the back post, put in the shot from Marcos Blasco and Omar Robbana. The goal was reviewed for a possible offsides but the call stood. Aside from the goal, the team played a fairly even first half. Each team had five shots. Gino Cervoni made two first half saves, while Niklas Herceg had one for the Catamounts in the opening 45.

Hofstra had a great chance to equalize in the 60th minute, drawing a direct kick just outside the box. Goddard put the shot on target, but Herceg made a diving stop to his left to preserve the lead. The Pride would break through at 65:13 when Hempelmann-Perez headed in a headed cross from Thengill Orrason to tie the game. Goddard started the play with a pass into the box to Orrason. Just over two minutes later, Ziewiec put the Pride on top with a sliding shot past Herceg at 67:27. Owen Barnett and Evangelos Chrysostomou earned assists on the play.

The Catamounts would not go quietly and tied the game at 83:43 on a goal from Rui Aoki off a Robbana corner kick. Neither team would get great chances down the stretch, allowing the game to go to overtime.

In the extra session, Ziewiec won a tackle in the defensive end to start the Pride's winning rush. The ball ended up with Daniel Burko outside the box on the left side. He sent a perfect pass to Goddard and the CAA Player and Midfielder of the Year sent in a left-footed shot for the win.

Hofstra will take on 16-seeded Furman Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
