A Great Season Comes To A Close In Penalty Kicks At Furman

Greenville, SC - Hofstra and 16th-seeded Furman battled for 100 minutes before the match was decided in penalty kicks, with the Paladins advancing by a 5-4 margin in a NCAA Soccer Championship Third Round match at Stone Soccer Stadium. The Pride forced overtime with two Laurie Goddard goals 1:08 apart late in the second half to erase a 3-1 deficit.

Hofstra sees its tremendous season end at 14-5-1. Furman, which was ranked No. 1 in the most recent Top Drawer Soccer poll and No. 12 by the United Soccer Coaches, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 15-1-5 record.

The match was the final in the coaching career of Hofstra's long-time head coach Richard Nuttall, who is moving to an athletic development role. He ended his career with a 364-264-88 record.

Hofstra opened the scoring at 16:59 when Thengill Orrason sent a pass into the box that found the head of Burko. The senior forward redirected the ball past Furman keeper Ivan Horvat for a 1-0 lead. The Paladins would get the goal back at 44:24 on Luke Hutzell's goal from Diego Hernandez and Landon Hill to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 1.

The early part of the second half saw both teams look for chances before Furman would score two consecutive goals at 76:03 and 79:52 to take a 3-1 lead. Wilfer Bustamante had the first goal from Hutzell, while Diego Hernandez tallied the second from Bustamante.

However, Hofstra would not go quietly as Goddard scored back-to-back goals at 80:11 and 81:19 to tie the score at three. Samuel Francou assisted on the first goal, while Aleksei Armas has the assist on the equalizer.

Neither team could capitalize in the extra sessions, sending the match to kicks. The Pride went first in penalties and hit their first two shots (Armas and Pablo Hempelmann-Perez) before Stefano Campisi sent his kick high. Burko connected on the Pride's fourth kick and Goddard hit the fifth. The Paladins hit each of their first four kicks and Hill buried the fifth to send Furman on to face eighth-seeded Portland next weekend.
