Pride Earns Win In Home Opener; Davis Nearly Tallies Triple-Double

Hempstead, NY - Cruz Davis nearly tallied a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, while Victory Onuetu had his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a 95-61 win over Molloy on Monday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The game was part of Hofstra's annual "Class at the Court" day and came in front of nearly 2,500 raucous local students.

Davis tied his career-high in both rebounds and assists in the game in picking up his second career double-double.

A three-pointer from Biggie Patterson at the 15:31 mark of the first half gave Hofstra an early 16-6 lead, its first double figure lead of the contest. The Pride would be in control from there and led by 17 at the break as Preston Edmead hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left before halftime.

It was Patterson again in the second stanza as he drained another three-pointer in the opening minute of the second stanza to push the lead to 20, 51-31, for the first time in the contest.

Hofstra would take its largest lead of the game at 36, 91-55, with 2:47 remaining on a lay-up from A.J. Wills. The Pride would settle for a 34-point win as Molloy scored the game's final basket in the closing seconds.

German Plotnikov was second on the squad with 15 points, including three three-pointers in the game. He was joined in double figures by Edmead (12), Patterson (11), and Onuetu. Edmead added six assists, while Plotnikov had three blocks and Davis posted three steals.

Jared Weakly had 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for Molloy, which also got 13 points from Bryce Merchant and 12 points and six rebounds from Darius Coleman.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday when it travels to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. contest.
