Late Goal Dooms Hofstra Against Columbia

New York, NY – Despite erasing a two-goal deficit against Columbia, a penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter was enough to sink the Hofstra field hockey team in a 3-2 road loss to the Lions from Columbia Field Hockey Stadium. Hofstra is now 5-6 overall and Columbia moves to 5-4 overall.
 
The Lions got on the board with 6:15 left in the first quarter for the opener, and they doubled their lead inside the first five minutes of the second quarter. After Kelly Levengood had an initial shot denied by the Columbia goalkeeper, she swept the rebound into the net to make it a one-goal difference with 5:52 left before halftime.
 
The score remained at 2-1 in favor of Columbia after a scoreless third quarter, Hofstra evened the score at 2-2 on a penalty corner goal by Teresa Karoff, deflecting a shot on goal past the Columbia goalkeeper with 10:49 left in regulation. The Lions earned a penalty stroke on a foul with 3:01 left on the clock, and the hosts buried it to retake the lead.
 
Gwenn van Dijk and Kesia Richardson were credited with assists on Karoff's goal. In goal, Luci Hollister made two saves in 58:04. Jacinta Eolari Etche, Kate Kim, and Sophia Abate scored for Columbia, and Margot Hule tallied four saves in the win.
 
Hofstra returns to Cindy Lewis Stadium for a pair of home games, beginning on Friday, October 10, against Fairfield at 3 p.m.
 
NOTES:
-Karoff's goal was her fifth of the season.
-Hofstra outshot Columbia 11-9 and earned six penalty corners to Columbia's four.
-Hofstra is now 11-12 all-time against Columbia.
