Hofstra Clinches CAA Championship Berth with Win Over Towson

Hempstead, NY – For the first time since 2015, the Hofstra field hockey team will be playing in the Coastal Athletic Association Championship after claiming a 4-2 win over Towson on the final day of the 2025 regular season. Hofstra moves to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play, and Towson ends its season with records of 6-12 overall and 2-3 in CAA action.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead over the Pride with 1:01 left in the first quarter, but Hofstra answered back quickly after drawing a penalty corner with 37 seconds left off the stick of Teresa Karoff for her 13th goal of the season to even the score at 1-1. Deep into the second quarter with the score still knotted up at 1-1, Gwenn van Dijk sent a driven pass into the shooting arc and Jaime Lewis dove to get just enough of her stick onto the pass to redirect the ball through the legs of Towson goalkeeper Tessa Scheenstra for the go-ahead goal with 5:25 left before halftime.

Pilar Penaloza upped Hofstra's lead to 3-1, redirecting a pass from outside the arc by Efremia Geralis at the 8:42 mark of the third quarter. Less than a minute after Penaloza's goal, Lewis scored her second of the contest, flicking the ball past the charging Scheenstra before sweeping it home to make it a three-goal advantage with 7:44 left in the third quarter. Towson made it a two-goal game into the first minute of the fourth quarter with a goal, but it was the closest the visitors got to the Pride before the final horn sounded on the 2025 regular season.

Luci Hollister made four saves in the thrilling win over Towson. For the Tigers, Olivia Miller and Lydia Bennett were the goalscorers in the loss, and Scheenstra played 52:06 in goal.

The Pride enters the CAA Championship as the fourth seed, and they will face two-time CAA regular season champions and hosts Monmouth on Friday, November 7, at 10 a.m. from West Long Branch, NJ.
