Hempstead, NY – On a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon, the Hofstra field hockey team came back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 over Wagner in overtime on Senior Day from Cindy Lewis Stadium.
The Pride snaps a five-game losing skid with the win to improve to 6-7 on the season, and Wagner falls to 5-8 overall.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke goal 5:33 into the contest before adding a pair in the second quarter to make it a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. The Pride came out of the break fired up and took the game to the Seahawks, generating the first goal of the contest 5:07 into the third quarter off the stick of
Teresa Karoff. With the Pride trailing by two goals late in the contest, Hofstra pulled to within one of Wagner thanks to a goal by
Kristi Santos, finishing off a cross-goal pass from
Pilar Penaloza with 2:31 left in regulation. On Hofstra's second penalty corner opportunity of the fourth quarter with1:13 left on the clock,
Jamie Mc Millan finished off an inserted pass from Karoff past the Wagner keeper for the equalizer, sending the game to overtime after a last-second Wagner shot was blocked.
4:11 into the first overtime period, Karoff hit a lengthy clearing ball to
Gwenn van Dijk at midfield, and the freshman weaved her way past multiple Wagner players into the shooting circle, where she ripped a backhander to the far post past the goalie and in for the winner, sending the Pride bench pouring onto the field in celebration.
Karoff and van Dijk finished with a goal and an assist each for three points, while Mc Millan's goal was her first of the season, and Penaloza,
Efremia Geralis, and
Caitlin Lozano all tallied assists. In net,
Luci Hollister earned the win with two saves.
Hofstra resumes CAA play on Friday, October 17, on the road against Northeastern, before hosting New Haven on Sunday, October 19.
