Hofstra Outlasts LIU for Home Win

Hempstead, NY – A pair of fourth quarter goals from Teresa Karoff and Isabella Tassara helped the Hofstra field hockey team to a 3-2 win over LIU from Cindy Lewis Stadium.

Hofstra improves to 2-3 on the year following its second consecutive win, and LIU falls to 2-3.

After a scoreless first quarter, Hofstra got on the scoreboard first at 6:16 with one of its six penalty corners of the second quarter. Teresa Karoff sent the inbounds pass to Kesia Richardson on her right, and the sophomore defender sent a shot on target that took a deflection off the stick of an LIU defender and in for the opening goal.

After Hofstra had a goal waved off to start the third quarter, LIU evened the score at 1-1 at 6:06 after a shot from Micaela Skibski took a deflection off a Hofstra player's stick and over Pieke Roos for the equalizer. As both teams battled for the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter, it would be the Pride who pulled ahead with 10:35. Following a restart after an LIU foul, Tara McNally progressed the ball from midfield and fed a pass to Karoff in the LIU end. She entered into the shooting arc and gave herself enough space to her right to unleash a shot that found space between the LIU goalie's legs for the go-ahead goal.

The Pride added its third and final goal seven minutes later at 3:35 as LIU pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. Isabella Tassara and Pilar Penaloza combined for a give-and-go to beat the two LIU defenders, and Tassara calmly finished to give Hofstra a late 3-1 lead. Her goal would prove to be the difference as LIU's GiGi Ranoldo scored with 2:33 as the Sharks enjoyed the 12-player advantage with their goalie pulled before the final buzzer sounded.

Roos finished with two saves on the day for the Pride against the Sharks, and Karoff totaled three points on a goal and an assist.

Hofstra kicks off its Coastal Athletic Association schedule on Friday, September 20, at 3 p.m. against last year's regular season champions Monmouth.

-Hofstra moves to 5-0 all-time against LIU.
-Karoff finished with three points for the second game this season.
