#16 Hofstra Cruises Past UNCW

Hempstead, NY – A trio of first half goals guided the #16 Hofstra men's soccer team past visiting UNCW on a sunny Saturday afternoon from the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride, also ranked #14 in the latest Top Drawer Soccer poll, are now 5-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Coastal Athletic Association following the clean sheet victory against the Seahawks. UNCW slips to 1-2-3 with the defeat.

Hofstra jumped out to a one-goal lead three minutes into the contest when Jacob Woznicki sent an acrobatic bicycle strike through the crowded area right in front of the goal and into the back of the net off the first corner kick of the afternoon. As the Pride pushed for a second goal, Roc Carles drove through the midfield and into the penalty area before he was chopped down in the box by UNCW's Valter Salavuo. Eoin Farrell stepped up to the spot and beat the UNCW keeper low and to the right with a powerful shot for the 2-0 Hofstra lead at the 15th minute.

Hofstra pressed for a third goal throughout the remainder of the half, putting two shots on frame following its second goal of the contest. Inside the final five minutes of the first half, Jon Jelercic sent a cross from outside the UNCW box that found the head of a diving Lennon Gill, who thundered the shot past the keeper and in at the 43rd minute to put Hofstra comfortably ahead 3-0 at halftime.

While the Pride maintained control of the game over the Seahawks with a 7-4 difference in shots in the second half, they were unable to add to their lead over the visitors with a pair of saves by Trey Smiley, who took over for starter Viktor Engh after the first half.

The Pride hosts national powerhouse New Hampshire from the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, September 17, at 7 p.m.
