Boyds, MD - The #17 Hofstra men's soccer team exploded for three second half goals as the Pride dominated the final 45 minutes of the contest to earn a convincing 4-1 victory over American on Sunday evening at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
The victory was the first of the season for the Pride, which improved to 1-0-1 after opening the season with a tie against Fordham. American suffered its first defeat of the season and slipped to 0-1-1.
Hofstra got on the board first as
Gabriel Pacheco opened up the scoring in the 39th minute off assists from
Laurie Goddard and
Pablo Hempelmann-Perez. It would be the first of two assists on the day from Goddard, who had a beauty of a helper in the 71st minute on a goal from
Jacob Woznicki that pushed the lead to 3-1 at the time.
The teams would head into the break knotted at one before Hofstra took over in the final 45 minutes. Carles cleaned up a loose ball in front of the net in the 57th minute to put the Pride in front for good. After Woznicki's tally, an American turnover would lead to the final goal of the night off the foot of
Pablo Hempelmann-Perez.
Hofstra outshot American, 14-9, in the game - including 9-5 in the pivotal second stanza.
Filippo Dadone made one save in net to earn the win for the Pride, while Matthew Tibbetts had three saves for American.
Hofstra is back in action at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Thursday when it hosts Providence at 7 p.m. That game will air on FloFC.
